Window Painting

I moved back to San Jose a few months ago and started doing little projects for my old swim school in Cupertino. They commissioned me to paint their windows for the holidays and here is the final result! This is my first window painting as well as my biggest painting in a very long while. This took about 50 hours (theres 4-6 coats of paint on the entire thing...not fun) in a span of 2 weeks on top of my regular work hours. Some days I painted from morning until night in the cold, wind, and rain. I did however, take a day off when that massive storm hit the SF Bay Area.

The window paintings will be staying up through the end of January. It's kind of hard to see in these photos, but I have hidden 9 DACA swimming items throughout the windows. We have specific toys that have stayed at the pool for years, toys that our students have gotten very used to. Best part of painting these windows is seeing the kids run up and down the sidewalk to try to find everything! Even before I finished, they were so excited to see things painted right before their very eyes.

Normal window paint was not used for this project because in DACA's past experiences, they stick a little too hard to the windows. Scott Campbell's YouTube videos on window painting helped me kick off this project. I used Behr interior house paint with an eggshell finish (I'm a sucker for matte finishes) and regular old brushes I use for acrylics. I painted on the outside of the windows because the humidity from the pools inside would have royally screwed up the paint. The paint is resilient to scuffs and scrapes but can easily be removed with a window scraper without damaging the windows.

Now that this project is done, I can get back to working on children's book illustrations and work to get me into the mobile gaming world. So excited!

Custom Nikes

I have been wanting to custom shoes for years now. It all started around my senior year in high school when I painted some Vans canvas slip-on's and my friend's shoes...I didn't know what I was doing. I highly doubt those shoes are still going! Ack!

In better news, I found Angelus Leather Paints which works WONDERS. I've heard a lot about them but never invested in them until this semester. No idea why, but this semester I decided to explore all the different interests I have. It started off with spray painting into mobile game art, vector illustrations, logo designs, then shoe art. I must sound like a wonderful bundle of randomness!

So these paints are straight up MAGIC. I bent my shoes around a bunch and did my best to destroy the paint job, just to see if they're court-ready. THEY ARE! Can't play ball just yet, but I'll get there eventually.

Some friends are interested in customs, so these won't be my last :) I'm flying back up to Bay this week and will be picking up some old shoes to revamp for my brother and I. Hurray for spring break!!!!

P.S. I'm taking more spray painting classes. This time it's all about lettering and can control!

Spray Painting Classes

My street art classes at the Academy of Street Art in LA ended yesterday! Four 2-hr class sessions of pure bliss :) This was the perfect entry into spray painting, but I really need to work on can control. Clean lines are soooo hard. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much time I can put into this, seeing as I have a lot of necessary portfolio work coming.

The website is now up and live, check it out!

Super Fantastic Art Randomness!

It's my last semester here at CSUF, and graduation is two months away...
Yeah...
Totally not freaking out...

Anyway...this semester I have been exploring a lot of art things that I have always been curious about. I have finally gotten into: shoe art, graffiti/spray paint, book covers, and digital art for mobile games. I'm spread pretty thin right now, but I'm really happy regardless :) I've been wanting to do street art for at least 6 years now, about time I finally got to it! I'm also trying to do some more small digital drawings geared towards mobile gaming, just to expand my portfolio a little bit

The website is almost fully designed now, just waiting on some logo choices and then it will be going live. As soon as that goes live, so will the art Instagram account. The IG will feature all portfolio pieces as well as some work in progress pics. Shoe art will also be going up there, have yet to decide if they will be hitting the blog or website though?

Oh, I also got the Bronze award at the 2nd Annual CSUF Illustration Competition with my Sandman piece! My super fantastic friends Thinh Nguyen and Tina Chen also placed!! Good times for our little group of friends, just wish the 4th member of our group was back from Italy already to enjoy it with us.

Revamp Round...4?

Revamped everything again, tried to make it a little bit more professional? Just a quick redo, but all my recent work is up (including sketches for once).

So I recently had knee reconstruction surgery to repair my torn ACL and medial meniscus. I tore it 3x in August (not knowing I had a serious injury) while playing basketball. I haven't played since then, and I'm super heartbroken but at least I'm finally on the way to recovery! :) In less than 3 weeks I was able to walk, so I am super ahead schedule on healing/physical therapy. However, I still cannot play until 2015! :(

Lots of big things happening this semester, my final semester at CSU Fullerton! Got an internship in Animation Production with Film Roman in The Ultimate Spider-Man show and I'm surrounded by super cool people! Maybe the real world isn't so bad, haha.

School is going to be lovelyyy. I'm finally taking Perspective Class...compositions, rulers, perspective, and buildings. All my favorite favorite things...Had to tackle it eventually though, right? Better late than never. In addition to Perspective, I will also be taking two portfolio classes.

I'm going to be exploring mixed media and inking styles! Super excited! And I will also be trying YA book covers for the first time. Super long post, but that's the update on me!

P.S. Website + domain is construction...

Revamp Coming!

Old self-portrait of myself as a child...

Classes this semester: Special Studies in Illustration, Independent Study (with the mission of producing stand-alone media experimentation illustrations for nursery rhymes), Digital Narrative Illustration (digital painting), and Children's' Literature.

Fingers crossed that I find an internship as well this semester! I got a month to find one :x I will remain ever so diligent though! I feel like getting my foot in the door is the hardest part because interview-wise I am confident! :)

In other news, I tore my ACL and will be needing surgery if I am ever to play sports again. Yes, sports, not just my beloved basketball, but ALL sports. Cue depressing violin solo. Getting over the fact that I have to go over a year of rehab to even get on the court again is extremely difficult. Basketball and art are like two halves that make me whole. I have been playing basketball since I was 10 years old, and have never gone more than one month without playing (happened ONCE). Figuring out how to live my life with only one half of myself is a struggle, but I'm working it out...

Will be building my website very soon, will determine later if this blog will continue.
